What 'Research-Driven Organisation' Actually Means

Every product leader says they want to be research-driven. Very few can describe what that looks like in practice. If you cannot define it, you cannot measure it.

What It Is Not

It is not having a research team. A team can exist and produce excellent work while the rest of the organisation continues making decisions by instinct.

It is not saying "let's research that" in meetings. If the phrase defers decisions rather than genuinely committing to letting evidence inform the outcome, it is a delay tactic.

It is not reading reports. Consumption without action is not influence.

Ask yourself: When the last research finding contradicted what a senior stakeholder wanted to do, what happened?

What It Actually Looks Like

Research is referenced in product decisions by default.

Test this: Sit in on the next three product meetings. Count how many proposals reference a specific research finding versus opinion or competitor behaviour.

Findings are accessible to everyone, not held by the research team.

Test this: Ask someone outside the research team to find the findings from a specific past study. See how long it takes.

Research builds cumulatively.

Test this: Ask the research team to tell you everything the programme knows about a specific customer journey. If the answer requires someone to remember, the knowledge is temporary.

Negative findings are treated as assets.

Test this: Ask for the last research finding that made someone uncomfortable. Is it documented? Did it change anything?

How to Measure It

Research citation rate: in product decisions, what percentage reference a specific finding?

Cross-functional access rate: what percentage of findings are accessible without asking the research team?

Decision documentation rate: of studies completed, what percentage have a decision documented?

Knowledge retrieval time: under five minutes means the system works. Over thirty means it does not exist.

The Hard Truth

Most organisations that say they are research-driven have a team that conducts research and an organisation that makes decisions by committee, authority, or gut feeling. Being research-driven is infrastructure, not a values statement.
